Using Beading Chain with Smart Beads and Cord Ends

In this blog post, we’ll explore the world of Smart Beads and how to finish your necklaces made with beading chain.

What is Beading Chain?

The 0.7mm diameter beading chain is currently available in gun-metal, antique silver, and satin gold.

Beading chain is a fine chain with small & closely connected links allowing you string beads onto it. Beading chain is great if you want a necklace with the beauty of chain, that can accommodate stringing beads on it. It is great to use when you want to show some of the chain, rather than have the entire necklace filled with beads. We carry beading chain with 0.7mm diameter and 1.25mm diameter, in various finishes, all nickel-free hypoallergenic plated, good for most people with sensitive skin.

This necklace design uses 0.7mm gun metal beading chain. The beads are simply strung on, allowing them to move freely around the necklace.

The 0.7mm diameter beading chain can accommodate most glass beads, gemstone beads, & other style beads (but not most pearls, as they have very small hole sizes). The 0.7mm beading chain is finished with fold over cord ends.

A necklace design that uses 0.7mm beading chain with crimps to hold the beads in place and achieve a floating design.

In 1.25mm, we have antique brass, silver plated, & satin gold and works with larger hole beads. Many beads have 1mm hole sizes (or less), so those would only work with 0.7mm beading chain. The 1.25mm beading chain is finished with 2mm cord ends, then attach a clasp, which we explain how to do below.

What are Smart Beads?

Smart beads, as their name suggests, are a brilliant addition to your jewelry-making toolkit. Smart beads allow you to adjust the length of your necklace! You can slide them along the chain or cord, making on-the-fly adjustments to achieve the perfect fit. The silicone grip keeps the bead securely in place, granting you full control over the final look and fit of your creation.

Smart beads come in two sizes: 3mm and 4mm. The 3mm smart bead is ideally suited for use with 0.7mm beading chain while the 4mm smart bead pairs beautifully with 1.25mm beading chain. We carry the 3mm Smart Bead  in two nickel-free plated finishes: Antique Silver and Satin Gold. We carry the 4mm Smart Bead in nickel-free silver plated and nickel-free satin gold plated.  The samples are shown in the picture above.

In addition to beading chain, Smart Beads are compatible with a range of other materials like chains, leather cords, and cotton cording of similar size. For example, the 3mm smart bead can be used with 0.5mm leather and the 4mm smart bead can be used with 1.5mm leather.

Both the 3mm and 4mm smart beads have a loop inside diameter of 2.3mm. This is perfect for attaching a clasp, as shown in the sample below.

How to use Smart Beads

Using smart beads is a breeze. Simply thread your chosen material through the small opening located at the center of the bead, ensuring you pass it through the bead itself and not the attached loop.

The beading chain and leather are rigid enough that no needle is required. More loose or woven cord like S-Lon, waxed cotton cord or silk may require a needle. Another trick you can use to thread the woven cords is to put glue at the tip for about 1/2 inch and allow to harden before threading in the Smart Bead. That way you don’t need to use a needle, but you’ll eventually want to cut off the glued end, rather than include it in your finished jewelry.

Fold-over Cord Ends and Cord End Caps

Fold-over crimps and cord end caps serve the purpose of adding a loop to your beading chain, so you can attach a clasp or jump ring. We offer fold over crimps in a 1mm size. While these are designed to use with our 0.7mm beading chain, they can also be used with a variety of stringing materials.

2mm Cord End Caps. Starting from the left: Silver Plated, Satin Gold, & Brass. E6000 Glue at top.

Cord End Caps are used to add a loop to the 1.25mm beaded chain and are available in these nickel-free platings: silver, satin gold, & antique brass. Use glue such as E6000 to attach to the end of the chain.

Attaching Fold-over Cord Ends

To attach a 1mm fold over cord end, first trim the end of your cord or chain so that it’s even and neat.

I like to hold the chain with my thumbnail against the loop on the end of the crimp end to keep it in place while you fold it.

Using your flat nose pliers, gently bend one of the fold-over sides around the cord or chain to hold it securely in place. Once the fold makes contact with the chain, you should be able to let go of the chain with your thumbnail.

Once the fold over is on the chain, you can squeeze it hard with the pliers for extra security.

Once you secure the one side, give the chain a light tug make sure that its being held by the fold. Then you can fold over the other end.

For this, I put the crimp end at a 45 degree angle and squeeze down slowly. The fold over should end up over lapping the edge of the first fold.

Inspect your design to ensure that everything is secure and won’t just slip out when you tug on the cord.

The end result.

Note: if the chain/leather/cord comes through the other side where the loop is, you can slowly bend the loop at the top away from the folds and snip off the extra chain/cord with flush cutters. You can then bend back the loop straight.

Attaching Cord End Caps

To finish 1.25mm beading chain with cord end caps, it’s easy! All you need to do is dip the beading chain into the E6000, rotate the chain inside of the bottle, pull out the chain, & insert into the cord cap.

After about 30 minutes, you can usually handle the glued pieces with care, but be cautious not to subject them to stress or pressure. Allow 24 hours for curing–Maximum bond strength may not be reached for up to 72 hours.

Afterwards, you are ready to attach a jump ring & clasp! Not sure how to do that? Check out our opening and closing a jump ring video in our how to section!

Tips & Troubleshooting for Fold-over Cord Ends

  • To get a secure grip on the beading chain, the two sides of the fold-over cord end need to overlap on to each other.  Make sure the first side is as tight as possible over the beading chain or cord before folding over the second side.  This way they can overlap and have a tight grip on the chain or cord.
  • If, after you have bent over the two sides, and the beading chain or cord comes out, then you can use crimping pliers to make it secure.  Use the inner channel of crimping pliers to smash the two sides together. Then follow by smoothing with the outer “rounding” channel.
Beading Chain Necklace Kit in nickel-free antique silver. using 0.7mm beading chain, fold-over cord ends, 3mm smart bead and charms from our Halloween collection.

The result of this process is a piece of jewelry with an adjustable length. Whether you’re crafting a necklace that needs to adapt to various neck sizes or a bracelet that should snugly fit the wrist, Smart Beads allow you to slide them along the cord or chain to achieve the perfect fit. The silicone’s grip keeps the bead securely in place, granting you full control over the final look and fit of your creation. The cord ends allow you to attach a clasp to the beading chain.

The world of jewelry design is as boundless as your imagination, and with the right techniques and components, you can turn your creative vision into stunning, wearable works of art. Happy crafting!

New Copper & Blue Bracelet Design Ideas!

We, at Bead Inspirations, have come up with these three bracelet design ideas to inspire your creativity! These designs all incorporate copper findings and beautiful blue/aqua beads. Copper and blue beads can work well together in jewelry and design for several reasons, primarily due to the complementary contrast they create and the appealing visual harmony they can achieve.

This bracelet reminds us to love ourselves and each other. The warm/cool contrast, along with the mix of melon beads and faceted glass rondelles, creates a balanced and harmonious palette, providing visual interest and contrast. The magnetic heart clasp not only secures your precious accessory with a gentle touch but also adds a touch of romance to your everyday style.

The components used in this bracelet are:

The only tool needed for this bracelet is a pair of crimping pliers for the crimps at the end, ensuring a secure and professional finish. Additionally, you’ll need Flush Cutters to cut the Softflex. You can also work directly from the roll, as the Softflex is rigid and stiff enough to not require a needle for threading the beads.

Accentuating these exquisite lampwork beads are delicate Sky Blue and Honey Glass Rondelles, offering a graceful contrast that dances with the light. The addition of both copper spacers and brass bead caps creates a captivating interplay of warm and cool tones, symbolizing the perfect harmony of contrasts. To complete this artisanal piece, we’ve chosen a Copper Craftsman Toggle clasp, adding a touch of rustic elegance and ensuring both style and security.

The components used in this bracelet are:

Once again, the only tools needed for this bracelet are a pair of crimping pliers and flush cutters. However, we also recommend using Ultra Polish Polishing Pads 2×2″ for the brass bead caps. Polishing can enhance the details and highlights in the brass, making any decorative elements or designs on the metal more prominent and visually appealing.

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, this bracelet is a harmonious symphony of captivating elements, seamlessly combining the rich, earthy charm of Copper Saucer Beads, Copper Daisy Spacers, and a captivating Antique Copper Organic Flat Mini Circle at its heart. The Metallic Green, Medium Sky Blue, and Honey Faceted Glass Rondelles effortlessly catch the light, creating a mesmerizing play of colors and facets. The addition of Aqua Faceted Glass Rondelles further enhances the bracelet’s allure, adding a refreshing burst of aquamarine to the mix.

The components used in this bracelet are:

While working with Stretch Magic, be sure to pre-stretch it before you start stringing by pulling the cord in your hands and stretching it; this prevents the bracelet from sagging on the wrist by the 3rd time you put it on. Much like the Softflex used above, you can work off the roll as you string the beads and findings. We recommend gluing the knot with Hypo Cement or other glue so the knot doesn’t come undone. You can also use the Copper Organic Flat Mini Circle to hide the knot as shown in the 2 pictures above and below!

“Purple Rain on the Beach”

Artists Inspiration:

I spent a year living on the Oregon Coast, and rain often conjures up memories of drizzly days on the beach. Those memories inspired my use of the sea star bead and purple drop charm. The beads are strung on hemp cord, which I love for its grounded, earthy vibe. I used one of my other passions, crochet, by utilizing a tiny crochet hook to chain stitch in the beads. Lastly, I wanted this piece to be versatile, so it can be worn as either a wrap bracelet or long necklace.

Bead Inspiration Notes: We love how this artist built her design around her memories on the beach using the Lentil Lampwork Glass Bead: Starfish You can also find a lovely assortment of Czech Glass beads and stringing options including Hemp Cord in the shop!

“Early Morning Purple Rain”

Artists Inspiration: It was inspired by early morning rain drops rolling down my window.

Bead Inspiration Notes: We love that this artist uses a mix of sizes of Swarovski Pearls and uses a wire coiling technique taught in our Coiling, Weaving and Wrapping Class. Bravo!

“Purple Rain Passion”

Artists Inspiration: Prince to me was a man of many passions; his music, flair, and fashion. These Swarovski iridescent purple pearls and bicons with their changing colors and gold plated melody links, reflect this passion to which we were all drawn. Purple Rain Passion is my tribute to a legend – brilliant, colorful, unique.

Bead Inspirations Notes: We love how this artist uses the Swarovski iridescent purple pearls and bicones, plated melody links, with our bead caps to create a simple yet elegant design.

“With love”

Artists Inspiration: I made this bracelet for my daughter who would be spending the summer away so that it would remind her of me when she wore it. It is not made with colors that she typically wears, but includes some of my favorite colors and gemstones. I hope it gives her a warm feeling and makes her smile when she wears it.

Bead Inspirations Notes: We love the ombre effect of color this artist created using several of our gemstone beads.. We also applaud the choice of natural leather with these lovely stones using the techniques she learned in our Wrap Bracelet Class.

“Purple Wraps”

Artists Inspiration:  I really like working with wire and had been perusing the beading magazines at Bead Inspirations and a necklace design I saw in one of them. I thought it would be good practice to make a single link to get the technique. I decided to use the colored wire 20 gauge. I really loved the way it looked so I made another link. I like rustic Jewlery and did not need the earrings to match perfectly.

Bead Inspiration Notes:We love the very creative and intricate earrings. The artist uses creative wire and seed beads from Bead Inspirations to create these striking and inspired earrings.

“Diamonds and Pearls in the Purple Rain.”

Artists Inspiration: I have always loved the color purple, and I am a fan of Prince so this challenge really resonated with me. I took into consideration Prince as an artist as well as his body of work when I was choosing the beads: Purple Swarovski Pearls, and Black Swarovski bicones with black seed beads. The pearls have a green hue to them when viewed in bright light, which speaks to the depth of Prince as an artist: more than meets the eye at first glance. I also liked the sparkle of the bicones which represents the charisma and flare of Prince, the seed beads represent the many songs Prince wrote. He was a prolific writer not just for himself but his songs worked well for so many other recording artists. In these earrings I see Purple Rain as well as Diamonds and Pearls.

Bead Inspiration Notes: We love the way this artist uses Swarovski iridescent purple pearls and bicones along with seed beads from our shop to create an amazing pair of earrings.

“Purple Cascade”

Artists Inspiration: Prince and his music were a big part of growing up for me, in a very rainy climate near Portland, Oregon. I remember humming along to the song Purple Rain as it was playing in my head, walking to class in the constant Oregon mist and thinking it was just perfect. My concept for this piece started with water and rain, and I envisioned a sort of cascade effect, using chain and purple beaded rungs to evoke that feeling. The design took a few different tries to get right, but I’m so happy with the result. The wordplay with rain and cascades of water and the Cascade mountains of Oregon appeal to me and make me smile. I used the flat round stones with a herringbone wrap because they remind me of beautiful purple eyes. Prince had such beautiful eyes, and I hope that his view now, wherever he may be, is broader than in his (too short) earthly life here with us.

Bead Inspiration Notes: We love choice of materials and techniques chosen by this artist to create this inspired design. The herringbone wrap (taught at Bead Inspirations) truly brings out the uniqueness of each of the Lavendar Jasper Coin Beads. We also love the thoughtfulness in selecting various Swarovski Pearls chain, crystal bicones and other components from our shop.

“Purple Rain”

Artists Inspiration: “Purple Rain” was inspired by the photograph, I used Keshi pearls to resemble his white stand up landau collar, and nesting floral breads to pick the folded pleates of the guitar band holder. Classic Purples colored stones in verying sizes to add dimension and richness. The dark Purple Rain symtobol is an symbol of all of his musical achievements and with music of his guitar. I backed the photograph Lacy’s Stiff Stuff, then did a simple peyote stitch border stitch around the base and finished with 8/0 beads. I hung the picture with chain from the pearl strand. The intent is to remember Prince with the laughter and joy that his music gave and the moments of happiness that he brought into your life.

Bead Inspiration Notes: We love the way that this artist was able to reflect a true tribute piece balancing the Glass Bell Flower Beads with White Keishi Pearls and a mix of Amethyst Beads with her treasured photo and Symbol charm.

Beautiful Zipper Pulls

Robbie came into my Alameda bead shop with 3 dresses with zippers down the back.  With her arthritic hands, she finds them difficult to pull up and down with the tiny little zipper pull that comes standard on the zipper.  She talked with a friend about a possible solution and they thought that putting a loop of some type on the zipper instead of the standard zipper pull would be better, and that Bead Inspirations might have just the thing.  Then she could use a hook to pull it up and down.  So we looked through our toggle clasps and Vintaj components section to find some things that were decorative enough for the dresses.
zipper_pull_heart_hook

I attached them with a jump ring over the existing zipper pull.  For the silver toggle ring, we used the nice heavy rhodium-plated jump ring.  With the Vintaj components, we used the Vintaj 7.25mm brass jump ring.

On one of the dresses, the neckline had a lot going on, so she didn’t expect to wear jewelry with it.  So we added a little decoration to the zipper pull.  We used the Vintaj Waterlily Pendant, added Vintaj Brass Fine Ornate Chain and crystals.
waterlily_zipper_pullrobbie
It was fun to help her with this creative solution. Robbie’s going to look great in her new dresses at her upcoming events!
